Dance, an art form believed to be over 10,000 years old, has always been an essential part of human expression. From the earliest cave paintings to ancient rituals honoring the gods, dance has stood the test of time as a universal language of movement. But dance is not just about tradition—it has continually evolved. In the 1970s, in the heart of New York’s streets, social dancing emerged as an expression of freedom and unity, where individuals from all walks of life, especially those who faced racial oppression, found solace in the art of movement at places like "The Loft." This space became a sanctuary for anyone to gather and express themselves without judgment, a place where dance spoke louder than words.
Dancing is unique because, unlike speech or written language, it has been with humanity since its inception, even before we could articulate thoughts with words. It remains one of the few forms of expression that has transcended time and cultures. It is a true reflection of human emotions—joy, excitement, passion, and the thrill of freedom. But despite its deep roots in history and its ability to evoke immense joy, many in India still shy away from pursuing dance as a career or passion.
This brings us to the vision of Dream 2 Dance—a platform designed to inspire and nurture young talent in dance, regardless of their background or circumstances. The journey of many aspiring dancers begins with self-doubt, often fueled by societal beliefs such as, "Why should I, a boy, dance?" or "I can never dance like them." These thoughts hold many back from discovering the joy that comes from dancing. However, it is essential to understand that dance is not about comparing yourself to others or trying to be the best. It is about embracing your uniqueness and expressing who you are through movement. The true beauty of dance lies in the freedom it offers to be yourself, to let go of insecurities, and to celebrate your individuality.
Let me share my personal journey with you. I began dancing during the lockdown, inspired by the electrifying performances of BTS. One day, a friend showed me one of their dance videos, and I was instantly hooked. I thought to myself, “If they can do this, so can I!” Determined to learn, I spent a week practicing in my small room, watching tutorials, and repeating the steps again and again. At first, I struggled, but I didn’t give up. I kept going, practicing until I could perform confidently. Even when I danced offbeat and made mistakes, my friends cheered me on, and that support gave me the confidence to continue.
That experience taught me one of the most important lessons in life: it’s not about being perfect; it’s about finding joy in what you do. That joy kept me going, and over time, I improved. From attending workshops to flying to Korea to perform with a renowned choreographer, I’ve learned that dancing is not just about skill—it’s about passion and happiness. While I may not be the best dancer in the world, the joy I get from dancing fuels my drive to keep improving.
In today’s world, dance is not just a hobby; it has become a profession with endless possibilities. Many colleges in India, such as Delhi University, now offer dance quotas, allowing students to pursue their academic goals alongside their passion for dance. Internationally, prestigious institutions like NYU and Berklee cater to aspiring dancers. Furthermore, the rise of reality dance shows like India’s Best Dancer or Street Woman Fighter in Korea has opened up new avenues for dancers to build careers that are as respected as those of doctors or engineers.
If dance has ever sparked your interest, I urge you to pursue it without hesitation. The belief that dance cannot be a viable career or that it is reserved for a select few is simply a myth. The truth is, there is always room for dance in your life. Science even supports this: dancing releases endorphins and boosts your mental well-being. So, even when life feels overwhelming, find time to dance. Dance is more than just an art form—it is a way to connect with yourself and find happiness.
No dream is too big, and no step is too small. Whether you're looking to dance for fun or make a career out of it, the first step is always the hardest—but it’s the most important. Keep dancing, keep expressing, and keep dreaming.
